Hey! My name is Isaac. I’m 11 years old and I am the Artist behind our Daly Honu Brand. During the world wide Covid-19 shut down, I took to drawing. I watched a lot of how-to draw YouTube videos and really enjoyed spending my days drawing. In November 2020, my mom asked me to draw her a turtle. The turtle you see all over our hats, is the turtle I drew.

Background on the turtle. My Pop Pop loved sea turtles. He visited the Hawaiian Island often and fell in love with everything the sea turtles (Honu) meant to the Hawaiian Islands. One year when we visited Maui we went to a craft fair and my Pop Pop was talking to a local artist who carved sea turtles out of whale bone. He bought one of his necklace and never took it off. On a later trip he found a leather bracelet with a sea turtle on it and he also never took that off.

The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, known as “Honu,” symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. Turtles can show up as a person's guardian spirit, known as “Aumakua.” When lost, turtles are excellent navigators and often find their way home.

I think he found comfort in what Honu symbolized. My Pop Pop had a rare lung disease and he was waiting for a lung transplant when we lost him in March 2019. We now find comfort in Honu, we have sea turtles all over our house to remind us of our Pop Pop. We visited Maui as a family in October 2019 and we loved finding all the Honu we could find and we know that our Pop Pop was there with us, maybe even one of the Honu.

This is where the inspiration for our Daly Honu brand came from. We want to honor our Pop Pop while also keeping the Honu thriving in Hawaii. We will be making donations to two different foundation in Hawaii that aim to keep the Honu protected.
